Celebrating 25 years of serving East Hawaii, Moody Radio's Hilo Satellator covers the business and government center of Hilo on 91.9 FM. Moody Radio Hilo originally signed-on the air with 40-watts of power Jan. 20, 1997. In 2015, Moody Radio finished a three-year project to upgrade the facility and coverage and now operates at 250-watts, strengthening the signal in downtown Hilo, as well as in nearby communities.
The diversified economy of the Hilo area includes agriculture, aquaculture, ranching, trade, tourism, education, and government. Hilo serves as the gateway to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The cost of living is considered high in comparison to other states. But the year-round pleasant climate means there is no need to purchase additional winter clothes, heating or air-conditioning. These higher costs also carry-over to the Hilo Satellator operational expenses, which at $880/month runs about 60% higher than the average Moody Radio Satellator. Hilo is home to the University of Hawaii at Hilo, Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawaii, as well as the Merrie Monarch Festival, a week-long celebration of ancient and modern hula which takes place annually after Easter. Hilo is also home to the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Corporation, one of the world's leading producers of macadamia nuts.
